Coach Ted Barclay retired in 1997 after serving 35 years as a teacher, administrator and coach at DU. Barclay, a standout athlete at Columbus North High School, earned his bachelor’s degree from Ohio State in 1953, where he was a member of the swimming team, and holds a master’s degree from Kent State.
Barclay was a teacher in Shaker Heights, Ohio, schools before joining the Denison staff in 1962. While at Denison, he was the men’s swimming coach for 17 years, coaching 21 All-Americans. He was head coach of men’s soccer for 25 years. In 1985, his NCAC championship squad posted a perfect 6-0 conference ledger, and his 1978, ’79, ’81, and ’82 teams all advanced to the NCAA Division III tournament. Seven of his players were named All-Americans. Barclay was also the women’s soccer coach for four seasons, and his 1993 team went 16-4-1, including an 8-0 NCAC record, earning a conference title and an NCAA tournament berth. In 1996, Barclay won his 300th collegiate soccer game, men and women combined. He also served two stints as DU’s golf coach (1985-87; 1991-2003).
Barclay was Denison’s director of men’s intercollegiate athletics for 12 years between 1979 and 1991. In his time at Denison, he also served as men’s lacrosse coach and men’s tennis coach. He was an assistant professor from 1962 through 1980, and an associate professor from 1981 through 1997. Barclay is a past president of the Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association and a retired captain in the U.S. Naval Reserve.
