Varsity D Association Hall of Fame
After 30 years of service to Denison, Dr. Larry Scheiderer is being inducted into the Varsity D Association Hall of Fame. After coming to Denison from Capital University in 1991, he spent 20 years as director of athletics before serving the next 10 years as director of athletics operations and compliance.
Larry arrived at Denison as the university’s first unified director of athletics, physical education & recreation, overseeing all men’s and women’s varsity sports programs. During his time as director, the Big Red won 11 NCAC All-Sports Championships and finished in the top three of the All-Sports standings for 14 consecutive years. In 2006 and again in 2011, Larry was named the Division III Athletic Director of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. Under his direction, Denison won 86 conference championships and two NCAA national championships.
Larry’s vision and leadership helped usher Denison through three major athletics facility projects. The first took place with the original construction of the Mitchell Center, which included the addition of a new Olympic-sized indoor track and state-of-the-art indoor tennis courts. The second involved a renovation of Deeds Field-Piper Stadium that added lights and an artificial turf playing field in 2007. The third was the 2012 Mitchell Center renovation and the addition of the Crown Fitness Center and the signature Trumbull Aquatics Center with its Olympic-sized 50-meter competition course and large, separate diving well.
As the director of athletics operations and compliance, Larry managed the operating budget for the Department of Athletics while overseeing the NCAA Division III rules compliance for some 600 Denison varsity student-athletes every year. When he took on the role in 2011, he also was charged with overseeing the completion of the Mitchell Center expansion.
During Larry’s tenure at Denison, 29 Big Red athletes earned the coveted NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, and he retired from Denison best known for his impeccable administrative talent, building remarkable facilities, and leaving Denison Athletics perfectly positioned for future success.
