Nan Carney-DeBord arrived at Denison in 1976 from Haddonfield, N.J. A physical education major, she lettered four times each in basketball (1977-80) and field hockey 1976-79. She was captain of the field hockey team for three years (1977-79) and captain of the basketball team and the team’s Most Valuable Player as a senior (1980).

Carney-DeBord served as the head women’s basketball coach at Ohio Wesleyan University where she also served as associate athletic director and professor of physical education. Her teams at Ohio Wesleyan have compiled a record of 215-115 with 13 consecutive winning seasons, and Carney-DeBord has been named NCAC Coach of the Year several times. Until 1990, she was also the field hockey coach at OWU. Her squads won four consecutive NCAC titles and made four straight NCAA Division III playoff appearances.

In July of 2011, Carney-DeBord was named Denison's Director of Athletics.
