Professional auto racing driver and team owner Bobby Rahal '75 was the first recipient of the Varsity D Association Athletic Citation.

The citation recognizes Denisonians who have gone on to distinguish themselves in the field of sport, but do not qualify for Hall of Fame membership.  Rahal won three championships and 24 races, including the 1986 Indianapolis 500, during his 16-year career in the CART open-wheel series. Rahal was inducted into both the International Motorsports Hall of Fame and the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 2004.
