Robert Gray competed in varsity tennis, basketball and track & field during his four years at Denison. As a member of the tennis squad, Gray was team captain his senior year and was selected to compete in the NCAA national tournament. As a Big Red basketball player, he was elected to captain the 1942-43 team coached by DU Hall of Famer Sid Jenkins. Gray was also a three-year letter winner in track & field, throwing the javelin.

While at Denison, Gray was class president his junior and senior years, and he was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. Before graduation, Gray enlisted in the Air Force’s pilot training program. Then, after receiving his diploma from Denison, he earned his wings. Gray a long time resident of the Dayton area, remained active in tennis after his college years and was inducted into the Montgomery County Tennis Hall of Fame. He earned recognition as the Montgomery County Tennis Champion.
