Darwin Zahn was a three-sport athlete at Denison, participating in football, track and baseball in his four years as a student. He was a track standout during all four seasons, setting records for the Big Red in both the pole vault (13’ 6’’) and the long jump (23’ ½”). Zahn was the Ohio Athletic Conference pole vault champion for four consecutive years, and he captained the Denison track team his senior year.

In football, Zahn lettered his junior and senior year starting at halfback and place kicking for the Big Red. He also set a Denison football record while in school. On a cold and snowy day in the fall of 1957, in a game at Oberlin, Zahn kicked a record seven extra points in Denison’s convincing 60-7 defeat of the yeomen.

Although Zahn felt his talents were best suited for baseball, he didn’t swing the bat for Denison until the spring of his senior year, when he doubled up with track. Much of his time that season was spent running over the hill between the track at Deeds Field and the varsity baseball diamond. He is a member of the Denison chapter of Sigma Chi fraternity.
