P.J. Schaner was a four-year letterwinner in swimming from 1987 through 1990. After being named the team’s Most Outstanding Freshman in 1987, Schaner went on to serve as team captain in 1989 and 1990. He was also selected as the team’s Most Valuable Swimmer in 1989 and 1990 and was awarded the Coach’s Award in 1990. Schaner earned All-North Coast Athletic Conference honor in each of his four seasons with the Big Red, was a two-time conference champion and was named to the NCAC 10th Anniversary team. Between 1987 and 1990, P.J. was awarded 16 All-American plaques. 

At Denison, P.J. was a member of Alpha Epsilon Delta honorary or pre-medicine and Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.  Shaner holds a medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh and is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. He has been a volunteer for Healing the Children Medical Mission which travels to South America. He has been awarded the American Academy of Periodontology Award for Excellence and the Leo M. Dandoff Society of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Award for outstanding achievement in the teaching of medical students.
