Scott Shorney, an economics major who came to Denison from Wheaton, Ill, lettered three times in track and field (1986-88) and once in soccer (1985). In track and field, he was the team’s MVP in 1986, ’87 and ’88. He was the NCAC’s Most Valuable Indoor Field Athlete in 1986, ’87 and ’88; Most Valuable Indoor Track Athlete in 1988; Most Valuable Outdoor Field Athlete in 1986; and Most Valuable Outdoor Track Athlete in 1986, ’87 and ’88.

Shorney was the 1986 NCAC indoor champion in the long jump, triple jump, 60 yard dash, 440-yard dash, 300-yard dash, and he anchored the winning mile relay. He was the 1986 NCAC outdoor champion in long jump, triple jump, 100 meters and 200 meters, as well as a member of the championship 400-meter and 1600-meter relays.

He was the 1987 NCAC indoor champion in the long jump, triple jump, 60-yard dash, 440-yard dash, 300-yard dash and mile relay; the 1987 NCAC outdoor champion in long jump, triple jump, 100 meters, 200 meters, 400-meter relay and 1600-meter relay; the 1988 NCAC indoor champion in the long jump, triple jump, 60-yard dash, 440-yard dash, and 300-yard dash; the 1988 NCAC outdoor champion in long jump, triple jump, 100 meters, 200 meters, 400-meter relay and 1600-meter relay.  

Shorney was an 11-time All-American in track and field spanning the 1986, ’87 and ’88 seasons. He was named to the NCAC 10th Anniversary All-Decade Track and Field Team. In 1986, Shorney was the NCAA Division III outdoor champion in the long jump, third in 400 meters and fifth in 400 meter relay. In 1987, he was the NCAA indoor champion in long jump and scored in five different events at the NCAA outdoor championships: first in the long jump, third in 400-meter relay, third in 1600-meter relay, seventh in 100 meters and fourth in 200 meters.

In 1988, Shorney was second in the long jump at the NCAA indoor championships and was third in the 400 meters at the NCAA outdoor championship.  He also competed in the long jump and triple jump at the outdoor championship.

Shorney still holds the NCAC and Denison records in both the indoor and outdoor long jump.  He also holds school records in the indoor 400 meters and the outdoor 4x400 relay.
