Bill Mason was a two sport athlete at Denison from 1953 to 1957 in lacrosse and basketball. In lacrosse, Mason was captain and the Most Valuable Player of DU’s Midwest Championship team in 1957, and was an All-Midwest midfield selection the same year. He established a Denison record of 38 consecutive controlled face-offs in 1957.  From 1958 through 1968, Mason was DU’s assistant lacrosse coach, serving as head coach in 1965, when the Big Red posted an 11-1 record and were Midwest co-champions.

Mason also established and played for the Columbus lacrosse club. He has served 39 consecutive seasons as an NCAA lacrosse official, and has officiated more NCAA National Championship games than any other Midwest lacrosse official. In 1983, Mason was awarded the Kirkpatrick Memorial Award for able and loyal service to the game of lacrosse as an official, and in 1995, he was elected to the Ohio Lacrosse Hall of Fame as the only member to be honored in each of the Hall’s four categories: player, coach, official, and pioneer.

Mason served as Varsity D Association president from 1981 to 1996, and on the Denison Alumni Council from 1980 to 1996. He was a member and officer of Sigma Chi fraternity and also a member of the Denison Alumni Interfraternity Council.
