Sid Jenkins taught and coached at Denison for nearly 40 years.
The native of Cambridge, Ohio was a four-year letter winner and two-year captain of the Denison basketball team. He was named All-Ohio guard twice and was chosen captain of the mythical All-Ohio basketball team once. Jenkins also earned three letters in football.
He received his bachelor’s degree from Denison in 1920, joined the college’s physical education department for a year, and then directed the athletic program at Cambridge High School, his alma mater, in 1921-22. Jenkins posted an impressive 19-3 record while serving as head coach of the Bobcats. Sid returned to Denison in 1922 and coached the college freshman basketball team until 1937, when he was named head basketball coach.
Jenkins was head coach for seven years and then was named director of the college’s intramural program, a post he held for 17 years. During his directorship, Sid expanded college intramurals from three to 18 sports. Upon his retirement in 1960, he was named associate professor-emeritus of physical education.
Jenkins, who earned the M.A. degree from Ohio State in 1937, was acting director of athletics and chairman of physical education several times at Denison. He served on the Granville village council and the board of public services.
