Grant Jones, M.D. is a four-year letter winner and Academic All-American as a member of the Big Red football team from 1984-87.  He is this year’s recipient of the Varsity D Association Athletic Citation.

One of the most academically decorated student-athletes in school history, Jones was also a two-time All-North Coast Athletic Conference defensive back in 1986-87.  As a senior, Jones served as the team captain and was named the team’s most valuable player.  That season, he was named GTE Academic All-America of the Year for football’s college division.  He also took home the Columbus Touchdown Club’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, the Woody Hayes National Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and was awarded the prestigious Postgraduate Scholarship from the NCAA.  At the conclusion of the 1987-88 academic year, Jones also received the Time Magazine College Achievement Award, presented to the top-20 college students in the nation based on overall achievement (academics, social service, and athletics).

Jones left Denison as a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and was the valedictorian of the Class of 1988.  A member of the Dean’s List in every semester, he was one of seven recipients of the Denison Presidential Medal.

After Denison, Jones would earn his M.D. with honors from The Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1992.  He was named Physician of the Year by the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association in 2007 and is a two-time recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award presented by the Ohio State College of Medicine and Public Health’s Department of Orthopedics.

He served as President of the Columbus Orthopedic Society from 2009-2013 and was recently elected to the American Orthopedic Association.
