Denison Shows Up Strong in Final Tuneup Before Conference

Granville, Ohio- The Denison men's and women's track and field teams competed with purpose at the Denison Big Red Invitational for this Friday's Senior Day. The men's team completed the invitational with 23 top-three finishes, while the women tallied 16 for the day. 

Throws
The throwers kicked off the invitational and found success early, seniors Chris Slater and Owen Mathes both earned top-three finishes throughout the day. Slater earned first place in shot put (15.06m) and in hammer clearing a distance of 59.11m, and came in third just behind teammate Mathes in the discus (41.80m). Mathes earned second in the discus after throwing a distance of 41.89m. Rounding out throws on the men's side was sophomore Jonathan Westfall who finished second in javelin after throwing a distance of 47.44m.

On the women's team Sydney Flores and Mariel Drost found themselves in the top three. Flores earned first in discus (39.28m) and finished second in shot put after throwing a distance of 12.14m. In hammer throw, Drost came in third with a distance of 41.39m.

Running
The men's team found success around the track, with seniors in multiple events pacing the Big Red to top-three finishes. In the 100m dash, Jaylin Epps and Caleb Zell- Ratner would go one, two, with Epps finishing in 10.85 and Zell- Ratner in 11.06 seconds. The pair would help Malik Holley sweep the top three spots in the 200m dash with Holley in first (21.99), followed by Epps (22.37) and Zell- Ratner (22.45) in third. In the 400m and 800m dash Pierce Patterson (49.49) and Leo Wisnefski (1:57.30) respectively finished first in their events. Running the 3000m, Noah Cyr finished third with a time of 9:20.21, and in the 400m hurdles, Jason Rideout earned second with a time of 59.76. Denison closed out the running events, winning both the 4x100 and 4x400m relays. In the 4x100 relay, Epps, Zell-Ratner, Holley, and Ari Skolnik finished with a time of 41.59 seconds. In the 4x400 relay, the Big Red took first and second place. Jack Meyerowitz, Rideout, Wisnefski, and Harrison Monahan crossed the line in 3:31.34, followed by the second-place team made up of Declan Toomey, William Allain, Nathan Bertman, and Ian Harrington with a time of 3:40.77. 

The women recorded similar success around the track. In the 100m dash, Piper Lee earned third with a time of 13.31, and in the 200m dash, Anaya Jolivette and Emily Brennan would go one, two with Jolivette finishing in 25.52, and Brennan in 26.04 seconds. Annelise Bentley (1:06.22) and Abby McChesney (1:06.41) earned second and third, respectively, in the 400m dash. In the 3000m run, Lauren Perretta finished third with a time of 12:08.52. Denison continued to keep its foot on the pedal, with Mira Renaldi taking first in the 100m hurdles (15.83), and Ava Sinex earning second in the 400m hurdles (1:08.39). The Big Red would tack on two more first-place finishes in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. In the 4x100 relay, Lee, Jolivette, Renaldi, and Brennan finished in 48.91 seconds for first place, and in the 4x400 relay, Lee, Libby Hornick, Renaldi, and Lillian Wallace-Larkincrossed the finish line at 4:20.18.

Jumps
The Big Red found itself on top of the jumps leader board throughout the invitational. On the men's side, Tyler Miller earned first in high jump (1.95m) and third in long jump (6.45m), while teammate Liam Quinlan took third in high jump with a height of 1.85m. Earning first place in long jump was fellow senior Jack Blais, who cleared a distance of 6.78m. Rounding out the jumps events were Seamus McCann and Jason Spino in pole vault. McCann finished just ahead of Spino, after clearing a height of 4.57m, while Spino finished in second after recording a height of 4.20m.

Similar to the men's dominance, the women earned second place in high jump, pole vault, and long jump. Rose Bohlsen finished second in high jump after clearing a height of 1.40m, in pole vault senior Catelyn Gagnier cleared a height of 3.17m, and in long jump Jolivett jumped a distance of 4.85m.

The North Coast Athletic Conference Combined Events Championships begin on Saturday, April 26, and last through Sunday, April 27, at Oberlin College. Then, on May 2-3, the Big Red will compete in the NCAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Greencastle, Indiana.
