No. 11 Denison sweeps No. 32 Grinnell to advance to Sweet Sixteen for third straight year

Box Score WHITEWATER, Wis. (May 11, 2024) – The No. 11 nationally-ranked Denison University men's tennis team won its second-round matchup at the 2024 NCAA Division III Tournament as the Big Red defeated No. 32 Grinnell College by a final score of 5-0 on Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

With the win, Denison (20-4 overall) secures its third-straight 20-win season and third-straight Sweet 16 appearance.

Doubles
  • After being named the NCAC Doubles Team of the Year earlier this week, the No. 18 nationally-ranked pairing of Kael Shah and Ethan Green defeated Aidan Klass and Lucas Willett 8-2 at No. 1 doubles.
  • Milan Gonela and Colin Gramley defeated Henry Bridgers and Wilder Cooke 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.
  • Jacob Patterson and Andy Mackler, who were named second-team all-conference this week and are ranked No. 10 in the Central Region, defeated Sam Rudenberg and Karch Knoll 8-3 at No. 2 doubles.
Singles
  • Shah, who is ranked No. 9 nationally in singles, won 6-3, 6-0 against Willett at No. 2 singles while Mackler, who has cracked the top-20 regional rankings as a senior, also won 6-3, 6-0 against Albert Bostoen at No. 5 singles.

Record Book Watch:
Single-Season Singles Wins:
  • Shah (28-4) is now alone in second place for singles wins in one season while Mackler (27-3) is tied for third. The record is 31 set by Andreas Chapides in 2023.

Next Up: Denison will return to action at 12 p.m. on Sunday, May 12, for the third round (Sweet Sixteen) of the 2024 NCAA Division III Championship, where the Big Red will face off against the winner between No. 14 Wisconsin-Whitewater and No. 18 Gustavus Adolphus College.
