Women’s track & field finishes fourth at All-Ohio behind four event championships

DELAWARE, Ohio (April 13, 2024) – Thanks to four event championships and five other finishes in the top-3, Denison University women's track & field finished in fourth place overall at the All-Ohio Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University.

Ohio Northern University won the All-Ohio team title with 146 points while Ohio Wesleyan University (132) was second and Case Western Reserve University (104) was third, just three points in front of Denison (101). 39 points separated the Big Red from fifth-place.

FRIDAY HIGHLIGHTS

Anaya Jolivette won the prelims of the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.55 seconds.

In the prelims of the 100 meter hurdles, Sydney Brown was fourth at 16.20 seconds and Ava Sinex was eighth at 16.50 seconds as both runners qualified for the finals.

Lexi Verdell earned her first All-Ohio honor with a third-place time of 12:20.14 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase to get the Big Red onto the scoreboard.

SATURDAY HIGHLIGHTS

Sydney Flores won the shot put with a personal record throw of 12.04 meters (39-06.00).

With a time of 12.43 seconds in the finals, Jolivette won the 100 meter dash for the third year in a row at the All-Ohio Championships. Jolivette was also third in the long jump at 4.96 meters (16-03.25).

After winning the 400 meter dash at the All-Ohio Championship last year, Sophia Ellerkmann won the 200 meter dash this year with a personal record time of 25.66 seconds.

In addition, Denison won the 4x400 meter relay for the second year in a row at the All-Ohio Championships, this time with a time of 4:00.79. For the second year in row, Ellerkamnn ran leadoff and Jolivette ran the third leg for the Big Red while joining them this time was Piper Lee running second and Tessa Gerhardt in the anchor position.

Denison's 4x100 meter relay team consisting of Lee, Ellerkmann, Libby Hornick and Jolivette was third at 49.94 seconds.

Kylee Silverman earned a runner-up finish in the hammer at 47.46 meters (155-08) while Amy Pollack was third at 47.02 meters (154-03). In the discus, Flores was fifth at 36.22 meters (118-10) while Silverman was seventh at 35.04 meters (114-11).

After finishing fourth in the prelims of the 100 meter hurdles on Friday, Brown remained in fourth place with a time of 16.11 seconds in the finals on Saturday while Sinex moved up two spots to finish in sixth place with a personal record of 16.20 seconds.

Brown also added a fourth-place finish in the 400 meter hurdles with a personal record of 1:08.32.

Lastly, Gerhardt was sixth in the 400 meter dash with a personal record of 1:01.41 while in the 1,500 meter run, Cara Bodary was seventh at 5:04.56 and Fiona Martinelli was eighth with a personal record time of 5:10.30.

NEXT UP: Denison will return to action on Wednesday, April 17, when they host the College of Wooster for a traditional dual meet. Field events will start at 3:30 p.m. followed by the track events at 5 p.m. at Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.
