ST. LOUIS, Mo. (April 12, 2024) – After falling to the Bears in the Championship match of the Midwest Invitational last time out, the No. 24 Denison University women's tennis team traveled to Missouri to take on No. 9 nationally-ranked Washington University in St. Louis for the second match in a row, and in the end, the Big Red fell 7-2 against the Bears on Friday.
Denison lost at No. 1 and then No. 3 doubles but saw
Kendall Schrader and
Caroline Lopez win 8-4 over Eleanor Archer and Karen Gao, the No. 7-ranked doubles pair in the Central Region, at No. 2 doubles to get the Big Red onto the scoreboard for the first time this season against WashU.
In singles, Denison took three of the matches to three sets as
Peyton Oda, the No. 16-ranked singles player in the Central Region, pulled out a hard-fought 6-1, 1-6, 1-0 (11-9) win in a third-set super tiebreaker against Nina Moravek, the No. 7-ranked player in the region, in the top spot.
In addition,
Maia Nowicki fell 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 against Amber Edmonds at No. 5 singles while Schrader fell in a another third-set super tiebreaker, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-5), against Emily Chiasson at No. 6 singles.
Denison is now 11-7 overall while WashU improved to 13-2 overall and 6-1 against ranked teams. WashU's only losses so far this season are to NCAA Division I Illinois State University (8-1) and No. 1 nationally-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (6-3).
Next up, Denison will return home on Sunday, April 14. to host Oberlin College in North Coast Athletic Conference action (10 a.m.), followed by a nonconference tilt against Earlham College (2 p.m.).
