GAMBIER, Ohio (September 18, 2023) – The Denison University men's tennis team opened its 2023 Fall season this past weekend at the nine-team Kenyon College Invitational, held Saturday and Sunday at Kenyon's VandenBerg Courts and Jasper Tennis Center.

The Big Red finished a combined 22-13 in singles, led by 3-0 marks from Kael Shah, Milan Gonela, Nadeem Jones, Jacob Patterson, Zachary Portnoy and Colin Gramley. In addition, 10 of the 12 Big Red players in action picked up at least one singles win.

In doubles, Denison was a combined 11-9 while the team of Shah and Patterson went a perfect 3-0 and the duo of Ethan Green and Gramely went 2-2.

Both Shah and Patterson finished the weekend a perfect 6-0 between both doubles and singles action while Gramley (3-0 singles; 2-2 doubles), Jones (3-0 singles; 2-1 doubles) and Portnoy (3-0 singles; 2-1 doubles) each collected five wins.

Gonela was a combined 4-2 (3-0 singles; 1-2 doubles) while Green (1-2 singles; 2-2 doubles), Nickawn Namdar (1-2 singles; 2-1 doubles) and Anthony Payiavlas (1-2 singles; 2-1 doubles) each added three wins.

In addition to Shah's and Patterson's performances against some of the top players in the tournament, another player that stood out to Head Coach David Schilling was Gramley, who went 2-0 in doubles on Sunday with Green and closed out the weekend with a nice 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) win vs. Rohan Bhat from Case Western Reserve University.

The Big Red will be back in action in two weeks (Sept. 29-Oct. 1) for the ITA Central Regional Championships and the Big Red Invitational.
