GRANVILLE, Ohio (September 12, 2023) – After an undefeated start (4-0-1) five matches into its 2023 season, the Denison University men's soccer team had been ranked No. 16 in the first-regular-season United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll.
Denison earned four straight victories to start the season and had three shutouts and three two-goals wins during that stretch.
The season began with a 2-0 win at home over Roanoke College behind goals from
Cameron McIntosh and
Jack Rice, two assists from
Jake Krueger, and a shutout from
Tommy Prokos. Denison then defeated Transylvania University 3-1 at home behind two goals from Krueger and the first goal for transfer
Kameron Kist.
Denison's first road match of the season saw a 1-0 victory at Marietta College as Krueger netted his third goal of the season and Prokos recorded his second-straight shutout performance. That was followed by a 2-0 road win at Grove City College as
Henri Heyes and
Rohan Tripathy both found the back of the net while
Zach Barr picked up his first shutout of the season in goal.
Most recently, Denison tied Franklin College 2-2 just one day ago as
Chris Giglio and
Phil Koutsaftis gave the Big Red an early 2-1 lead that they could not hold on to in the final minute.
Krueger leads the team with nine points (3 goals, 3 assists) while Prokos and Barr have combined for 12 saves, a .800 save percentage and a .060 goals-against average.
Denison is currently just over halfway through the nonconference portion of its schedule as they host Centre College at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, September 15, in Granville, Ohio, before a pair of regional matchups against No. 5 John Carroll University and No. 22 Case Western Reserve University loom the following week.
In addition to the national rankings, the Big Red are also ranked second in the United Soccer Coaches NCAA DIII Region VII poll behind only No. 5 John Carroll (4-0).
