CLEVELAND, Ohio (May 6, 2023) – The No. 14 nationally-ranked Denison University men's tennis team secured four straight victories in singles as the Big Red defeated the University of Mary Washington 5-2 in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Tournament held at Case Western Reserve University on Saturday.

Doubles
- Just one day after being named First-Team All-North Coast Athletic Conference for doubles, the freshman pair of Ethan Green and Camden French earned an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles over Brock Ladehoff and Peter Leese to get Denison off to a good start.
- However, Jack Bulger and Kael Shah came up short at No. 1 doubles (8-6) against the No. 8-ranked doubles pair in the Atlantic South Region, Rishi Charan Shankar and Andrew Watson, to tie the match at 1-1.
- Then at No. 3 doubles, Zachary Portnoy and Andy Mackler went to a tiebreaker against Artis Hart and Andrew Cooper, but came up short 8-7 (7-3) to put the Big Red behind going into singles.
Singles
- Green kept his momentum going with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Leese at No. 5 singles to tie the match at 2-2.
- Just a few moments later, Andreas Chapides won 6-3, 6-1 over Cooper at No. 6 singles to give the Big Red back the lead at 3-2.
- Mackler got Denison to within one point of the win with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Ladehoff at No. 4 singles.
- In a race to see who would get the clinching point, Jacob Patterson, the 2023 NCAC Newcomer of the Year, finished first with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 three-set win over Hart at No. 3 singles.
- Kael Shah was close to another win at No. 1 singles, where he led Charan Shankar, the No. 10-ranked singles player in the Atlantic South Region, 7-6 (7-3), 6-6 (5-1) before the match was clinched.
- Bulger, meanwhile, was in his third set against Watson, the No. 19-ranked player in the region, facing a 5-7, 6-3, 3-4 deficit at No. 2 singles.

Record Book Watch:
- Freshman Andreas Chapides extended his new Denison single-season record for singles wins to 31.
- Jacob Patterson's 24 singles wins rank fourth on Denison's list for a single season while the 22 wins for Ethan Green are fifth.
- Chapides' 45 combined wins between singles and doubles this season are good for the second most in a single season in program history, surpassing the number from teammate Marc-Lennart Harms (44 wins) in 2022. The leader is Tim Cianciola with 55 combined wins last year.

Team Records:
- Denison improved to 26-3 overall, three more wins than the previous program-high of 23 wins set just last season.
- Saturday also marked the third win in program history at the national tournament. It was Denison's second win at the national tournament in the last two seasons after a 24-year gap between wins before that.

Next Up: Denison will return to the Carlton Courts at 12 p.m. on Sunday, May 7, for the third round (Sweet Sixteen) of the 2023 NCAA Division III Championship, where the Big Red will face off against site-host and No. 1 nationally-ranked Case Western Reserve University.
