GREENSBURG, Pa. – Denison women's tennis continued their opening weekend to the dual season on Sunday afternoon as they earned a 4-3 victory over D-II Indiana University of Pennsylvania at the Greensburg Racquet Club.
The Big Red opened with an early lead on the doubles courts, claiming all three doubles wins to take an early 1-0 lead due to NCAA Division II rules. Denison's top duo of Alex Cash and Hannah Cianciola opened competition with a 7-6 (8-6) win over IUP's Idoia Huerta and Katya Minchenkova while Sarah Robertson and Sydney Cianciola took down Mariana Valenzuela and Julia Newman 6-2 on the No. 2 court. Devin Gramley and Madeline Hart rounded out DU's doubles dominance in No. 3 play when they defeated Maria Magraner and Thais Andreotti, 7-5.
In singles action, Cash and Sydney Cianciola dropped a pair of three-set heartbreakers to Minchenkova and Huerta, respectfully, on the top two courts to take their first deficit of the day, 2-1. However, the Big Red rebounded in No. 3 play when Robertson swept Andreotti 6-1, 6-2 and Hannah Cianciola allowed DU to retake the lead after pushing past Newman 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 12-10 on the fourth court.
