Women's track & field suffers dual meet loss at Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio – Denison women's track and field tallied five event victories on Wednesday evening, but the Big Red fell short to the College of Wooster by a final score of 75-55 in a traditional dual meet at the Scot Center in Wooster.

Led by three gold medals in the field events, sophomore Leah Ackerman highlighted DU's efforts in the weight throw and the shot put with a pair of wins. In the weight throw, Ackerman led the Big Red pack in first place with a new personal best launch of 44'9.50" (13.65 meters). Junior Anna Vrancken followed in second place at 43'0.50" (13.12 meters) and Tam Dzolic closed out the top-three in third place with a personal record distance of 41'10.50" (12.76 meters). Abby Reppert took fourth place (39'9.25") and Becca Skolnick landed in sixth (31'6"). Ackerman also took first overall in the shot put with a final mark of 35'3" (10.74 meters) while Vrancken placed third overall at 32'3.50" (9.84 meters) and Dzolic in fourth (30'9").

In the pole vault, freshman Danielle Wydick set a new personal record on a leap of 9'7" (2.92 meters) to lead Denison in first place. DU also earned a third-place finish in the high jump from sophomore Ashley Schmoll who reached a final mark of 4'5" (1.35 meters).

On the track, Schmoll led the Big Red in the 60-meter hurdles, winning the event with a time of 10.80. She also competed in the 200-meter dash and took second overall at 30.20. Junior Molly Smith followed in third place by .02 seconds at 30.22. Smith's best finish of the day came in the 400-meter dash when she checked in at 1:06.51 in second place. Smith also joined Sydney Chandler, Sydney Lerda, and Allie Holmes in the 4X400 meter relay where they placed first overall on a final time of 4:35.66.

In the 4X200 meter relay, Holmes teamed up with Anna Lindower, Aileen Schretzmayer, and Roberta Fisher to finish in second place after clocking in at 2:05.92. Holmes was also one of seven Big Red to crack the top-10 in the 800-meter run, led by Carolyn Trent in second place at 2:34.79, Holmes in third (2:38.40), and Emily Willson in fourth (2:40.91).

Willson's best showing came in the one-mile run where she headlined the DU runners in third place with a final time of 5:41.30. Sarah Radziewicz trailed by .51 seconds in fourth place at 5:41.81 and Trent claimed fifth place at 5:42.48.

The Big Red will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 8 when they host the annual Bob Shannon Invitational at the Mitchell Fieldhouse in Granville. Field events will begin at 12 p.m. with the running events to follow at 2 p.m.
