GRANVILLE, Ohio – Denison women's track & field traveled to the College of Wooster on Saturday and placed fifth overall at the 2020 Fighting Scots Invitational.
The Big Red ended the day with six, top-five finishes, all of which came in the running events for DU. Freshman Merritt Newton logged Denison's best finish of the day in the 5,000-meter run when she placed second overall with a final time of 21:15.97.
Denison added a pair of top-fives in the 800-meter run led by Sydney Lerda in third place at 2:30.23. Carolyn Trent followed in fifth place after checking in at 2:34.98 while Angela Cuiffo took 10th place at 2:42.45. Cuiffo also joined Erin Anderson, Molly Smith, and Sydney Chandler in the 4X400-meter relay to place fifth overall with a final time of 4:40.80.
Continuing their success in the distance events, sophomore Emily Willson earned a fifth-place finish in the 3,000-meter run when she clocked in at 11:17.46. Aileen Schretzmayer also took fifth overall in the one mile run at 5:50.37 with Anna Lindower following in eighth place at 6:00.25.
In the 400-meter dash, Smith led the Big Red in sixth place with a final time of 1:05.94. Chandler finished in eighth place at 1:09.19.
In the field events, Denison tallied two, top-10 finishes in the weight throw led by Anna Vrancken in sixth place with a maximum effort of 44'6.25" (13.57 meters). Leah Ackerman trailed in ninth place at 43'1.75" (13.15 meters) with Tam Dzolic claiming 11th place (41'3") and Becca Skolnick taking 15th place (29'4.75").
In the shot put, Dzolic led the pack in seventh place with a toss of 33'11.25" (10.34 meters). Denison followed while claiming 12th-14th place highlighted by Ashley Schmoll in 12th place at 32'1" (9.78 meters) with Ackerman taking 13th (31'4") and Vrancken in 14th (31'0.50").
Schmoll also competed in the long jump event and placed eighth overall with a leap of 14'2.25" (4.32 meters).
The Big Red will return to Wooster next Thursday, January 30 when they compete in a traditional dual meet with the Fighting Scots.
