Box Score GRANVILLE, Ohio – DePauw's Jay Klein and Jack Seamands responded with a pair of the goals in the first half as the Tigers overcame Denison's early lead and handed the Big Red a 2-1 loss on Saturday afternoon at Barclay-Thomsen Field.
With Denison holding a 12-9 shot advantage throughout the match, the opening minutes appeared bright for the Big Red at 5:11 when a blocked shot from Vitor Rocha was rebounded in the back of the net by fellow freshman Ethan Miracle for his team-leading fourth goal of the season as Denison took the early lead, 1-0.
In the 22nd minute, the Tigers turned on the offensive attack when Jay Klein entered the Denison defensive third looking for a shot on goal. After a Big Red foul was committed inside the box, Klein went one-on-one with Colin Cramer on the match's lone penalty shot. Klein capitalized on his attempt with a goal-scoring shot in the upper-righthand corner as the Tigers tied the match at 1-1.
After DU's Luis Zamora sent a shot wide left in the 41st minute, DePauw took the lead with less than a minute remaining in the half when Zach Napora sent a pass to Jack Seamands at the top of the box who fired it past the keeper for the Tigers' second goal of the day and to take a 2-1 lead into the break.
In the second half, the Big Red attempted to tie the match in the 62nd minute on a shot from Ryan Albers, but DePauw's Dylan Ruzbasan collected his fourth save of the day and kept Denison's deficit at 2-1.
The Big Red added one more shot in the half, but the Tigers kept DU off the board as Denison dropped to 5-7-1 on the season and 2-3 in the NCAC. DePauw improved to 9-5 and 3-2 in conference play.
Miracle led Denison's effort with a goal on four shots while Rocha followed with two shots. Albers and Eric Buer also added shots on goal for the Big Red. Klein finished with a goal on three shots for DePauw. Quinn Flaspohler and Jake Limauro followed with two shots each.
In goal, Ruzbasan earned the victory with four saves in 90 minutes of action. Denison's Cramer allowed two goals in a full match effort.
Denison will remain at Barclay-Thomsen Field on Tuesday, Oct. 22 when they host Oberlin College at 7 p.m.
