MONROEVILLE, Pa. -- Entering the weekend as the No. 24 ranked team in NCAA Division II, Indiana University of Pennsylvania defeated the Big Red 6-3 on Saturday afternoon at Club Sport & Health in Monroeville, Pa.
Capturing two of the three doubles wins, IUP's Jarka Petercakova and Luise von Agris took an 8-1 victory over Lauren Hawley and Emma Alsup in No. 1 doubles, while Denison's Megan Hickey and Ashley Hammons dropped No. 2 doubles play to Nicole Beidacki and Katya Minchenkova, 8-5. The Big Red was able to secure an 8-6 win in No. 3 doubles when Madeline Hart and Devin Gramley took down Julia Newman and Mariana Valenzuela.
On the singles courts, Hawley opened the competition with a three-set victory over Petercakova, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. In No. 3 singles, Hickey took the second set from Minchenkova, 6-3, but the sophomore Crimson Hawk tallied a win in the next set, 6-3, to win the match in the third set.
Denison's final win of the night came in a three-set match between Hammons and Newman. After Hammons secured the first set 6-3, Newman won the tiebreaker in the second set, 7-5. The final set belonged to Hammons as she wrapped up the win, 10-3.
The Big Red will return to action next Friday, March 2 when they open their home schedule with Hope College at 5 p.m. on the Denison Tennis Courts.
