Meza's OT goal sends Heidelberg past DU

Box Score

GRANVILLE -- Rodrigo Meza's goal with 59 seconds left in overtime lifted Heidelberg to a 1-0 victory over Denison on Tuesday night at Piper Stadium.

The Big Red had several opportunities to score in regulation. In the 17th minute, junior Brenner Bodell slipped a pass to freshman Will Rudolph in the middle of the field. Rudolph was able to thread a shot between a defender's leg that tailed just outside the right post.

Senior Kyle Skinner and sophomore Luis Zamora had two chances to collaborate for a goal. Skinner sent a beautiful cross from the right side line that found the head of Zamora eight yards out. Unfortunately, the sophomore's attempt struck the left post before being cleared out of danger by the Berg defense. Just over two minutes later, the two tried to hook up again when the senior sent another ball into the box. This time, Zamora's header was snagged out of the air by a leaping Jake Kress.

With a minute to play in the first extra session, Kyle Diaz collected a pass in the middle of the field and sent a ball towards the right side line to a streaking Kiki Alvarado. Alvarado one-touched a pass towards the back post that was one timed into the net by Meza.

The Student Princes held a slim 15-14 edge in shots with both teams recording five shots on net. Heidelberg had nine corner kick opportunities compared to six for the Big Red, while the two teams combined for 28 fouls, four offsides and two yellow cards.

Zamora and Will Kendall paced the attack with three shots apiece, while goalie Andrew Shediac made four saves. Meza's score came on his third shot of the match, while Diaz and Alvarado had three and two attempts, respectively. Kress made five stops in the victory.

Denison falls to 3-4-2, while Heidelberg improves to 3-5. The Big Red resumes North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday when they travel to Hiram for a 7:30 p.m. match.
