Box Score Capital's Cheyn Roux broke a scoreless tie in the 36th minute. Despite some solid looks by Denison in the second half, Roux's goal stood up as the Crusaders left Piper Stadium with a 1-0 win.
In the first half, Denison's Kennedy Kommor nearly put DU on top when he dribbled past two Crusader defenders and went one-on-one with Capital goalkeeper Justin Niswonger who turned away Kommor's shot-on-goal.
Capital came close to scoring in the 23rd minute when Daniel Bundschuh uncorked a shot from 33-yards away that went over the outstretched arm of Denison keeper Andrew Shediac only to clang off the crossbar.
Thirteen minutes later, Calvin Saunders threaded a short pass to Roux for the first and only goal of the contest. It was the fifth goal of the season for Roux.
In the second half, after a yellow card was issued to Captial's Dominic Zumpone, the Big Red was awarded a free kick. Off the free kick, Denison's Jake Girardot headed the ball at the goal only to have it sail over the crossbar.
Denison's final scoring chance came in the 69th minute when Austin Howard sent a shot-on-goal from 12-yards that was saved by Niswonger.
The Big Red held a 12-11 advantage in shots and edged the Crusaders in corner kicks, 8-6. Shediac posted two saves for Denison while Niswonger ended with three saves for Capital.
Denison returns to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 17 when they travel to Wilmington, Ohio for a 12 p.m. match against the Quakers.
