Denison's NCAA Tournament run comes to an end

Denison's season came to a close on Friday in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament as 10th ranked Washington University defeated the Big Red, 5-0 from the Tao Tennis Center in St. Louis, Missouri.

DU advanced to the second round after a 5-0 win on Thursday against Concordia of Wisconsin.  As the host of the opening three rounds, Wash U. received a bye into the second round.  They took control in doubles as Jamie Silver and Grace Deering defeated Lauren Hawley and Meg Chiumento, 8-4 in a battle of two regionally ranked doubles teams. 

At second doubles, Lisa Chionis and Rebecca Ho, the region's top singles player, handed Emma Alsup and Ashley Hammons an 8-4 loss.

The first point of the match was locked up by Kaylan Griffin and Aly Coran at third doubles after topping Megan Hickey and Charlotte Purnode, 8-2.

In singles play, the match was clinched in out of the fifth and sixth flights as Griffith defeated Hammons, 6-1, 6-1 and Chionis knocked off Carol Vitellas, 6-1, 6-0.

DU's season comes to a close with a 15-8 record.  Washington University (16-8) advances to the third round where they will face Sewanee on May 14 at 10 a.m.

Denison's doubles team of Lauren Hawley and Meg Chiumento will continue on to the NCAA Division III Doubles Championship.  Hawley also qualified for the NCAA Division III Singles Championship.  That will take place May 26-28 at Stowe Stadium in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
