Big Red falls in season finale at #25 Oberlin

Box Score

OBERLIN, Ohio -- The Denison men's soccer team closed out the 2016 season with a 3-2 setback at 25th-ranked Oberlin on Saturday night at Fred Shults Field.

Denison sophomore Luis Zamora broke the scoreless tie in the 20th minute with his second goal of the season. Zamora received a pass from the midfield, dribbled past the defense into the box and scored with a low shot at 19:25.

Almost 18 minutes later the Yeomen netted the equalizer. Trenton Bulucea struck the crossbar with his initial shot, setting the table for Jack McMillin to tap the rebound into the lower left corner. McMillin's third goal of the season sent the two teams into the intermission deadlocked at 1-1.

At 53:44, Oberlin drew a penalty in the box that set up a penalty kick. Nick Wertman successfully converted the PK for his 14th goal of the year, giving the home team a one-goal edge. Thirteen minutes later, Sam Weiss scored his sixth tally of the year to extend the Yeomen lead to 3-1.

Denison's Christian Keiper shrunk the deficit to one in the 76th minute after firing a shot across the keeper and into the left side of the goal. The Big Red unleashed two more shot before the final horn, but neither made it on frame.

The Yeomen held a 16-12 edge in shots, while also attempting five of the game's six corner kicks. Denison was whistled for nine infractions compared to just two infractions by Oberlin. DU netminder Jack Thomas made six saves, while Yeomen keeper Koryn Kraemer had three stops.

Denison wraps up the season with a 6-9-2 overall record, while Oberlin will enter next week's North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament with a 14-3-1 mark.
