Seniors shine in final home match

GRANVILLE -- Denison's six-man senior class made a huge impact in their final match at Barclay-Thomsen Field as they helped the Big Red pick up a 7-1 victory over Wittenberg on Tuesday night. DU's five senior field players accounted for 13 of the team's 20 points.

The senior duo of Henry Pohlman and Kyle Skinner combined to break the scoreless tie in the 11th minute when Pohlman took a pass from his classmate before blasting a shot into the lower left corner from 25 yards out. Skinner picked up his second assist roughly 10 minutes later when he slipped a pass to sophomore Luis Zamora who netted his first-career goal after depositing a ball into the lower left corner from the right side of the field.

Sophomore Christian Keiper added to the Denison lead by bury a David Reina cross into the lower left 90 for his second goal of the season. Keiper's sliding score came at 40:31. With 9.7 seconds left in the first half, Wittenberg's Alberto Zaragoza broke up the shutout bid with a goal from 10 yards.

Just 31 seconds into the second period, seniors Connor O'Neill-Dee and Kennedy Kommor teamed up for their first of two goals in the period. Kommor fed a pass to a wide open O'Neill-Dee who ripped a shot off the keeper and into the goal. Almost six minutes later, the two hooked up again to extended DU's lead to 5-1. This time, O'Neill-Dee snuck a diving header inside the right post off a crossing pass from Kommor at 51:29.

Skinner picked up his third goal of the season after bending a shot around a Wittenberg wall from 20 yards out, while junior Drew LaGaipa set the final score with a one timer off a left-side cross from senior defender Cameron Boone.

O'Neill-Dee (2 goals) and Skinner (1 goal, 2 assists) both finished with four points, while Pohlman also had a score. Kommor handed out two assists, while Boone added another. Senior goalie Andrew Shediac also made four stops in just over 70 minutes of action.

The Big Red outshot the Tigers 20-13, while also holding a 13-6 advantage in shots on frame. The two team combined for 24 fouls and 10 corner kicks.

Denison improves to 6-8-2 overall and 3-4-1 in the NCAC, while Wittenberg is now 3-13 and 0-8 in league play. The Big Red will close out the regular season this Saturday when they travel to Oberlin, Ohio to take on the 25th-ranked Yeomen. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
