Gonzalez scores twice to propel Tigers past Big Red

Box Score

GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- Julian Gonzalez scored both DePauw goals as the Tigers edged the Denison men's soccer team 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Reavis Stadium.

Gonzalez opened the scoring by converting on the first shot attempt of the match in the 8th minute of play. Jonathan Wheeler gained possession via slide tackle before sending a cross in to Gonzalez for the score.

Over a half an hour after the game's opening tally, the Big Red netted the equalizer in the 40th minute. At the 38:47 mark, junior captain Jordan Williams ripped a shot off a Kennedy Kommor corner that was turned aside by Tiger goalie Harrison Glover. Senior Henry Pohlman followed up the Williams attempt that found the back of the net for his second goal of the season. Pohlman's goal sent the two teams into the intermission deadlocked at 1-1.

The score remained tied until the 74th minute when Gonzalez registered an unassisted goal at 73:32. His 13th goal of the season gave DePauw a 2-1 advantage; a lead they would hold onto until the final whistle. The Tigers outshot the Big Red 17-7, but both teams registered just three shots on goal apiece. Glover finished with two saves, while Denison keeper Jack Thomas had one stop.

Denison falls to 5-8-2 overall and 2-4-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, while DePauw improves to 10-3-2 and 5-2 in league play. The Big Red will play their final home game of the season on Tuesday when they host Wittenberg at 7 p.m.
