PK pushes Denison past No. 23 Emory

Box Score

Denison sophomore defender Jordan Williams scored via a penalty kick with 77 seconds remaining in regulation.  That broke a 1-1 tie, propelling Denison to a 2-1 win over No. 23 Emory University in Atlanta, Ga.  By going 2-0 on the weekend in Atlanta, the Big Red won the championship of the Sonny Carter Invitational.

DU started the match quickly as first-year Karch Majtenyi scored his first collegiate goal off a cross from Jake Girardot.  Majtenyi's goal came just 1:58 into the match.

Six minutes later, Emory's Sebastian Hardington would provide the equalizer when he headed in a ball off a rebounded save by Denison goalkeeper Blake Schach.

The match would remain deadlocked, seemingly destined for overtime until the Eagles were flagged for a foul inside the box.

The penalty kick goal was the first of Williams' career.  Emory did edge Denison 14-10 in the shot department.  Of those 10 Denison shots, only two were on frame, but both shots resulted in goals.  The Eagles held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.  Hardington and Christian Meyer led Emory with three shots apiece while Majtenyi and Girardot were Denison's shot leaders with two each.

The Sonny Carter Invitational consisted of four teams: Emory, Oglethorpe, St. Joseph's (Long Island) and Denison.  The Big Red had five players named to the 12-man all-tournament team.  They were Luis Zamora, Ryan Fine, Henry Pohlman, Schach and the MVP went to Williams.

Denison will look to extend its winning streak to three on Wednesday, Sept. 9 when they host Wilmington at 7 p.m. at Barclay-Thomsen Field.
