Fine's OT goal keeps DU undefeated

Box Score

Denison senior defender Ryan Fine scored in the 99th minute to propel the Big Red to a 2-1 victory at Capital University on Saturday in Bexley, Ohio. With the win, DU remains undefeated with a 6-0 record.

It took almost the entire overtime period for the Big Red to register a shot, but when they did they made it count. Sophomore goalie Jack Thomas came up with a big save in the 92nd minute to keep Calvin Saunders from ending the match. With less than two minutes to play in the first OT, Fine unloaded a shot into the left corner from the right side for his first goal of the season and the third of his collegiate career.

Denison is now 6-0 for the first time since the 2003 season when they started the season with 13-consecutive victories.

The Big Red fell behind early when Calvin Saunders gave Capital a one-goal lead with his fourth goal in the 11th minute. Connor Blakely served a ball into the box that Saunders chipped into the left side of the goal at 10:58.

The Crusaders maintained their lead until the 37th minute when sophomore Will Kendall netted the equalizer. Kendall ripped a shot from outside the box that snuck into the upper right corner. The sophomore's second-collegiate goal sent the two teams into the intermission all tied up at 1-1. The two teams went the entire second half without netting a goal which pushed the game into an extra session.

Capital outshot Denison 13-10, including a slight 6-5 edge in shots on goal. The Big Red attempted seven of the game's 12 corner kicks, while the Crusaders were whistled for 14 infractions compared to DU's nine.

Freshman Christian Keiper led the Big Red attack with three shots, while Fine, Kendall and Luis Zamora each had two attempts. Thomas finished the game with a season-high five saves.

Saunders paced the Capital offense with six shots and a goal, while Jacob Pulliam and Blakely each recorded two shots. Goalie Trevor Funk took the loss after entering in the second half. Starter Justin Niswonger made three saves in the opening half.

In addition to extending the Big Red's winning streak, Saturday's win also marked the 399th career victory for Denison Head Coach Rob Russo. DU will try to get Russo his 400th win on Wednesday when they host Marietta College at Barclay-Thomsen Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
