Big Red men earn first win of the season

The 26th-ranked Denison men's tennis team earned its first victory of the season following a 6-3 win over No. 40 Stevens Institute of Technology on Sunday morning at Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va.

A sweep in doubles play proved to be the difference for DU as the two squads split the six singles matches. The big win in doubles came at the top flight where the Denison duo of Grant Veltman and Casey Cempre upset the nation's third-best doubles team in Matthew Heinrich and Ben Foran. Veltman and Cempre snapped a two-match skid at No. 1 singles with an 8-6 victory.

At second doubles, Jeffrey LoDuca and Jackson O'Gorman-Bean picked up their first win as a team this season with an 8-6 victory over Danny Polk and Michael Feldman, who were ranked 11th in the Northeast Region. Sophomore Owen Smith and freshman Grant MacPherson completed the sweep with an 8-5 win over Kyle Henry and Tyler Tisdale at the No. 3 flight.

In singles action, O'Gorman-Bean knocked off Polk via matching 6-4 scores at third singles to put Denison one point away from the victory. The win was secured when LoDuca and Smith won three-set decisions at the fifth and sixth flights, respectively. LoDuca defeated Henry 6-7, 7-6, 10-8, while Smith was victorious over Antonio Perich 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.

Denison improves to 1-4 on the year, while the Ducks fall to 1-2. The Big Red returns to action on March 7 when they travel to Kalamazoo, Mich. for a match with the Hornets. Match time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
