Box Score In the 103rd minute of double overtime, Nick Wertman punched Oberlin's ticket to the 2015 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament following a 2-1 win over Denison on Saturday in Granville. With the loss, the Big Red finished the 2015 campaign with an 11-3-3 record.
Trailing 1-0 at the start of the second half, Denison needed just 34 seconds to even the match. After an initial shot by Jake Girardot was turned aside by goalie Koryn Kraemer, freshman Karch Majtenyi followed up with a jump attempt that found its way into the back of the net. Majtenyi's fourth goal of the season came at 45:34 and tied the match at 1-1.
Both teams had a chance to gain the advantage roughly 10 minutes later. After creating a turnover along the right sideline, Henry Pohlman slipped a pass to Kyle Skinner who sent a strike that curled just outside the left post. On the Oberlin counterattack, Blake Schach made a diving save on John Ingham's shot through traffic towards the lower right corner.
With less than 20 minutes to play in regulation, DU had two quality chances to get the go-ahead score. The first came in the 73rd minute when Luis Zamora sent a through ball to Girardot. However, the sophomore lifted his attempt over the crossbar. Three minutes later, Will Kendall had a golden opportunity when he found himself one-on-one with Kraemer. Kendall was able to get his shot under Kraemer, but the attempt struck the right post before being cleared out of danger by the Oberlin defense.
Jordan Williams had the final scoring chance in regulation, but his header off a Girardot corner kick was kept out of the goal by Dan Lev at 81:16. Each team had a chance to earn the victory midway through the first overtime period. Zamora sent a crossing pass through the box to senior defender Ryan Fine who unloaded a shot that was corralled by Kraemer. Oberlin was once again able to counter, but Ingham was unable to redirect Timothy Williams cross into the open net.
The final regular season match for both teams finally came to an end at 102:43 when Wertman buried a header from point-blank range off a crossing pass from Adam Chazin-Gray.
The Big Red held a 22-18 advantage in shots, which included a 7-5 edge in shots on frame. Denison out cornered the Yeomen 5-3 and committed two more infractions (11-9). DU was also whistled for three of the game's four offsides calls.
Majtenyi scored Denison's goal on his only attempt of the game, while Girardot led the team with four shots. Zamora also had three shots, while five different players attempted two. Schach finished the match with three saves in nearly 103 minutes of play.
Ingham led all players with seven shots to go along with one assist, while Wertman and Trenton Bulucea had one goal on two shots each. Kraemer collected five saves en route to his ninth victory of the year.
With the win, the Yeomen (11-6-1, 5-4 NCAC) secured the fourth seed in the conference tournament which is slated to begin next week. Denison ends the year in fifth place in the NCAC standings after posting a 3-3-3 mark in league play.
NOTABLE: Prior to the game Denison honored its two senior members, Ryan Fine and Blake Schach. This duo has helped the Big Red post 38 wins, including seven consecutive victories to start this season.
