Denison ends fall season at ITAs

The Denison men's tennis team capped off its 2014 fall season last weekend at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Regional hosted by Wabash College in Indianapolis, Ind.

Senior Grant Veltman and freshman Jamie McDonald posted the best records for DU over the weekend after going 3-2 at the tournament. Despite losing their opening matches, the both athletes reached the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket.

Veltman suffered an opening-round loss to 12th-seeded Peter Leung of Chicago. Following the early setback, the senior rattled off three-straight wins to reach the consolation quarterfinals. Veltman knocked off Case Western Reserve's Bas Van Lent in the first round before taking down Kenyon's Peter Hazlett in the third round.  His biggest win of the tournament came in the fourth round of the consolation bracket when he knocked off third-seeded John Carswell of Washington University-St. Louis. Veltman's tournament run came to an end wish a loss to Chicago's Michael Selin.

McDonald's first-round loss came at the hand of Case Western Reserve's Joshua Dughi. The freshman rebounded with victories over Callan Louis (Oberlin), Harald Olsson (Augustana) and Jad Abdul-Aal (John Carroll) to reach the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket. McDonald also saw his string of wins haulted in the quarterfinals following a lost to Case Western Reserve's Kevin Dong.

Seniors Casey Cempre and Shankar Rajupet and sophomore Owen Smith were the three Big Red athletes to recorded first-round victories at the ITA Regional. Cempre, seeded 22nd, defeated Kalamazoo's Alberto Ayala before falling to Patrick Farrell of DePauw in the round of 64. Rajupet knocked off Chris Harrison of Elmhurst, but dropped a decision to WashU's Kevin Chu. Smith advanced to the round of 64 with a victory over Wittenberg's Alexey Topolyankskiy. However, a matchup with 17th-seeded Tyler Kratky of Washington University shortened the run for Smith.

The doubles team of Rajupet and Smith registered the lone first-round win for the Big Red. The duo knocked off Matthew Steiner and Karl Wenzel of Wheaton (Ill.) before falling to the 12th-seeded team from Kenyon, Timothy Rosensteel and Davis Thrailkill.

Denison will return to action on Feb. 6 against the University of Chicago in Cleveland, Ohio.
