Box Score Denison senior Evan Porter converted on a penalty kick in the 39th minute to send the Big Red to a 1-0 victory at Marietta College on Wednesday afternoon.
After five unsuccessful attempts and finding the back of the net, Denison was given a golden opportunity to break the scoreless tie when Boyd Kirk was issued a red card in the box at 38:23. Porter took the ensuing penalty kick, firing a shot past Pioneer goalie Tyler Sholl.
With a man advantage for the entire second period, the Big Red outshot Marietta 8-2. Sholl helped keep the Pioneers in the game with four saves, but the disadvantage stifled the home team's offense in the second half of the match.
Seniors Corey Ricketts and Mark Waterman each recorded three shots each, while classmate Collin Hockenbury had two attempts. In his first-collegiate start, freshman goalie Jack Thomas improved to 1-0 after posting three saves en route to his first shutout.
Todd Sabol led the Pioneers with three shots, while Brent Huck added two attempts. Sholl stopped six shots in 90 minutes between the pipes.
Denison moves to 3-3-1 on the year, while Marietta falls to 2-5. The Big Red returns home on Saturday for their North Coast Athletic Conference opener against Allegheny. Saturday's match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
