Box Score Thomas More netted two unanswered goals to rally past the Big Red, 2-1, on a chilly Tuesday night at Barclay-Thomsen Field in Granville, Ohio.
Denison struck first in the 30th minute when senior Mark Waterman found the back of the net for the second time this season. After the Saints were whistled for a foul, Waterman sent a free kick that towards the Thomas More goal. The senior's attempt skimmed off the head of a Thomas More player and into the lower right corner of the goal. Waterman's 13th-career goal put DU in front 1-0.
The lead was short lived as Nathaniel Seig came off the bench to score the game-tying goal in the 32nd minute. Seig settled a cross from the right side and fired a shot into the lower right 90 from 15 yards out. The score remained tied as the two squads entered the intermission.
Thomas More eventually broke the tie in the 56th. RJ Best got the play going with a through ball to Christopher Lehan. Lehan sent a cross from the right side into the box that was redirected into the goal by Austin Juniet.
The Big Red had a golden opportunity to net the equalizer off a Waterman corner kick. However, a solid play by one of the Saint defenders kept a Henry Pohlman shot from crossing the goal line. Denison attempted two more shots over the final 35 minutes, but both shots were corralled by Thomas More keeper Matt Kees.
Denison held a slim 9-8 advantage in shots, including a 5-3 edge in attempts on frame. Both teams attempted two corner kicks, while DU was whistled for twice as many infractions (8-4). Waterman finished with three shots and the Big Red's lone goal, while Kennedy Kommor also had two attempts. Junior Blake Schach made one stop in just over 89 minutes. Freshman Jack Thomas played the final 51 seconds for Schach after Juniet collided with the junior keeper, forcing his early exit.
Juniet and Brian Runyon each logged two shots. Kees finished the game with three saves in 90 minutes between the pipes.
Denison falls to 2-3-1, while Thomas More improves to 5-2. The Big Red returns to action next Wednesday (Sept. 24) when they travel to Marietta. Match time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
