The Big Red men's tennis team closed out its trip to Fredericksburg, Va. with an 8-1 victory over Vassar on Sunday at the University of Mary Washington.
Denison secured a 2-1 mark at the Mary Washington Invitational following its win over Brewers. On Saturday, DU split a pair of matches against nationally-ranked opponents. The Big Red defeated 20th-ranked North Carolina Wesleyan 7-2 on Saturday morning before dropping a 6-3 decision to the host Eagles, ranked 28th in the country.
In Sunday's win over Vassar, the Big Red swept all three doubles matches and won five of the six singles flights. The No. 2 doubles tandem of Casey Cempre and Andrew Marczak improved to 3-0 over the weekend and 11-2 on the year following an 8-4 decision.
The Big Red's No. 1 (Juan Guerra and Grant Veltman) and No. 3 (Jeffrey LoDuca and Jackson O'Gorman-Bean) doubles teams each improved to 2-1 at Mary Washington. Guerra and Veltman notched their second-straight win with a 9-8 (8-2) decision, while LoDuca and O'Gorman-Bean rebounded from their first loss with a dominating 8-1 victory.
Of DU's five singles victories, three were achieved in straight sets. Cempre notched his fourth-straight singles win thanks to a 6-0, 6-1 win at the fourth flight. Marczak (6-4, 6-2) improved to 3-2 at third singles, while O'Gorman-Bean (6-2, 6-1) moved to 8-3 overall and 4-1 at No. 6 singles. Guerra and junior Graham Gettel both notched three-set victories at the first and fifth flights. Guerra climbed over the .500 mark with his victory, while Gettel's win snapped a three-match skid.
With the win, Denison improves to 3-2, while the loss drops Vassar to 5-2. The Big Red returns to the court next Saturday when they host regionally-ranked Kalamazoo at 1 p.m.
