Box Score Denison's attempt to battle back from a 3-0 deficit fell just short as DePauw held on for a 3-2 win over the Big Red from Greencastle, Ind. The loss ends Denison's season at 8-8-1 overall and 5-4 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
DU broke through with their first goal in the 75th minute of play when Jake Girardot scored via an assist from Collin Hockenbury.
In the 85th minute a foul on the Tigers in the box would result in a penalty kick for the Big Red. Mark Waterman took the kick and converted, getting his squad to within one goal with five minutes to play.
The Big Red would force a corner kick with nine seconds left in regulation, but DU failed to get a shot on goal via the set-piece.
DePauw (10-7-1, 5-3-1 NCAC) edged Denison in shot attempts, 14-13 but the Big Red doubled up DePauw 10-5 in corner kicks. Jake Pezzuto posted five saves for the Tigers while Blake Schach ended with three saves for Denison.
DePauw's three goals were scored by Julian Gonzales (48:29), Mitch Tabler (48:55) and Andy Morrison (63:44).
The win by DePauw allowed the Tigers to leapfrog the Big Red in the final conference standings. Denison ends the year in fifth place while DePauw advances to the NCAC Tournament as the No. 4 seed.
