Box Score Senior Corey Ricketts scored twice to keep Denison's North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament hopes alive on Tuesday night as the Big Red doubled up Oberlin 4-2 at Fred Shults Field in Oberlin, Ohio.
With the win, Denison moved into a tie with DePauw for fourth place in the NCAC standings with three games remaining which includes a match with the Tigers in the regular season finale.
The Yeomen drew first blood when John Ingham converted on Oberlin's first shot of the game at 2:58. Ingham tapped a deflected ball into the goal for his seven of the season.
After eight unsuccessful attempts at netting the equalizer, Ricketts final snuck a ball past Oberlin keeper Oidie Kuijpers. Fellow senior Mark Waterman sent a cross into the box that was headed into the left side of the net by Ricketts for his fifth goal of the year in the 38th minute.
With less than a minute to play in the first half, Waterman put DU in front for good when he unloaded a long shot from outside the box that found its way into the upper left 90 with 58 seconds on the clock. Waterman's fourth goal of the season gave Denison a 2-1 lead at the intermission.
Five minutes and 52 seconds into the second period, Ricketts netted his second goal of the match and his sixth of the season. The Yeomen shrunk the deficit back to one goal when Adam Chazin-Gray took a psass from Slade Gottlieb, dribbled past the keeper and scored into the open net. Chazin-Gray's goal came in the 60th minute.
The score remained 3-2 until 85:02, when Kennedy Kommor was the beneficiary of a Waterman free kick. Kommor ripped a right footed shot off a free kick from the senior, who racked up his team-leading seventh assist. For Kommor, it was the second goal of his collegiate career.
The Big Red outshot Oberlin 25-11, including an 11-7 edge in shots on net. There were only 12 total fouls called in the match, but seven cards were issued between the two teams. The Yeomen were booked five times, while Denison was issued one card. DU also won the corner kick battle, 9-1.
The trio of Waterman, Ricketts and Kommor combined for 15 of the team's 25 attempts, led by Waterman's six shots. Junior goalie Blake Schach made four saves and surrendered two goals in 90 minutes. The Big Red backline also kept one shot from crossing the line in the 77th minute.
Ingham led Oberlin with four shots on the night. Kuijpers recorded five saves and allowed one goal in just over 58 minutes between the pipes, while backup Connor English posted two stops and gave up one goal in the final 31+ minutes.
With the win, DU moves to 7-6-1 overall and 4-2 in the NCAC, while the Yeomen fall to 5-7-2 and 2-3-1 in league play. Denison will play its final regular season home match on Saturday (Oct. 25) when they host 12th-ranked Wabash on Senior Day at Barclay-Thomsen Field. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
