Box Score The Big Red men's soccer team picked up an important North Coast Athletic Conference victory at Wooster on Saturday night, defeating the Fighting Scots 2-0 at John P. Papp Stadium in Wooster, Ohio.
With the win, DU improves to 6-6-1 overall and 3-2 in the NCAC, while the Fighting Scots fall to 3-9-1 and 0-6 in conference play. More importantly, the Big Red jumped from seventh to fifth place in the league standings with four NCAC matches left in the season.
After over 40 minutes of scoreless soccer, senior Evan Porter broke the tie at 40:19 with a header goal off assists from sophomore Cameron Boone and senior Mark Waterman. Boone flicked the Waterman corner right to Porter who also used his head to send the ball past Wooster goalie Daniel Quinn. The goal was Porter's third of the season.
The score remained 1-0 until the 75th minute when senior Corey Ricketts netted his team-leading fourth goal of the season. Freshman Will Kendall went streaking down the right sideline and fired a hard cross towards the left post that Ricketts drove into goal with a diving header. The Scots mustered just two shots following the Ricketts goal.
The Big Red held Wooster to just four shot, two of which were sent on goal. Both of those attempts were stopped by junior goalie Blake Schach. Schach played the first 80 minutes of the match, while freshman Jack Thomas closed out the final 10. Porter, Waterman and Max Haupt all logged two shots to pace the balanced DU offense.
Denison attempted all five corners in the match. There were five offsides in the match, three of which were called on the Big Red. DU also committed 14 of the match's 22 fouls.
The Big Red continues its push for an NCAC Tournament berth on Tuesday (Oct. 21) when they travel to Oberlin for a 7 p.m. match.
