No. 2 Kenyon escapes with 1-0 victory

Box Score

Denison was 28 seconds from sending No. 2 Kenyon to its first setback of the season.  Considering 6,572 seconds had already elapsed that sounded like a reasonable tradeoff and the crowd at Barclay-Thomsen Field were preparing themselves for a hard-earned scoreless tie.

Not so fast.

With just over 30 seconds to play in double overtime, a ball was struck by Kenyon's Nate Petrou from just in front of the Denison bench, a good 35 yards away from the goal.  With a pesky rain falling throughout the second half, moisture was a factor.  As Petrou's prayer sailed high into the night time sky, Denison goalkeeper Blake Schach back peddled and went for the catch.  Petrou's left-footed Hail Mary had some serious spin and the ball went off the gloves of Schach and to his left, where it crept into the corner of the goal, sending Kenyon to the improbable 1-0 win.

The loss was especially heartbreaking considering how well Schach and the rest of the Big Red had played.  Kenyon entered the match having allowed just three goals on the season.  Despite being outshot 21-5, Denison had some chances and could have easily been the team leaving with the 1-0 victory.  Instead, Kenyon improved to 12-0 overall and 4-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference while DU drops to 5-6-1 and 2-2 in conference play.

Denison's best scoring attempt came in the second half when Kennedy Kommor fired a shot at Lords keeper Sam Clougher from just outside the 18-yard box.  Clougher pulled off the diving save to keep the match scoreless.

Four minutes into the first overtime it appeared as if Kenyon had ended the match when leading scorer Tony Amolo scored from close range on a breakaway.  The linesman stepped in and flagged Amolo for being offside, which was the eighth of an eventual nine offside infractions on the Lords.

One minute later, Amolo would send another shot from inside the box at Schach who would jump and make the save sending the contest to the second overtime.

In the final OT, Denison's Mark Waterman put a shot on goal that was saved by Clougher.  In the 105th minute Kenyon had another great chance that went by the wayside when Jeremiah Barnes was left one on one with Schach.  Barnes shot from medium range would sail well over the Denison goal.

Five minutes later, with all eyes on the game clock, Petrou would send the Lords to victory.

Denison's five shots would come from Corey Ricketts (1), Kommor (1), Waterman (2) and Cameron Boone (1).  Kenyon got four shots from Dalton Eudy and Amolo.  Petrou finished with three shots and two shots on-goal.

Clougher posted three saves for the Lords and Schach ended with six stops.

Denison will return to action on Saturday when they travel to The College of Wooster for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff with the Fighting Scots.
