Waterman's late goal gives DU 2-1 win

Box Score

Senior Mark Waterman broke a 1-1 tie in the 82nd minute to lift the Big Red to a 2-1 victory over Wittenberg on Saturday afternoon at Barclay-Thomsen Field in Granville, Ohio.

With the win, Denison moved into a tie for second place in the North Coast Athletic Conference with a 2-1 record. The loss drops the Tigers to 0-3 in league action and 5-6-1 overall.

DU struck first in the 18th minute when freshman Jake Girardot netted his third goal of the season off an assist from Waterman. The score remained tied until 81:25 when Waterman buried a head from six yards out off a gorgeous sideline cross from freshman Will Kendall. The goal was Waterman's third of the season. The Tigers recorded two more shots, both of which were stopped by junior goalie Blake Schach.

Denison held a dominating 24-8 advantage in shot and attempted two more corner kicks than Wittenberg (7-5). The Big Red also committed 19 fouls compared to just four infractions by the Tigers.

Kendall attempted a game-best eight shots, while Waterman had six shots to go along with his goal and assist. Schach finished the night with four saves in 90 minutes of action.

Wittenberg's goal scorer Veuthey paced the Tigers with three attempts, while backup goalie Robby Frye made five saves in a losing effort. James Van Artsdalen played the entire first half, making three stops.
