Box Score Denison scored early, but Heidelberg would have the last laugh, scoring the game-winner in the 54th minute of play, as the Student Princes held off the Big Red 2-1 from Barclay-Thomsen Field in Granville.
DU jumped out in front in the fifth minute of play when Connor O'Neill-Dee sent a shot at the hands of Heidelberg keeper Matthew Stevens. The ball went off Stevens' hands and out to Jake Girardot who deposited the rebound into an empty net. The goal was the second of the season for Girardot.
The score would remain 1-0, in favor of the Big Red until the 35th minute when Chris Koczak fed Tyler Eoff who was left in a 1v1 situation against DU goalkeeper Blake Schach. Eoff gave two shakes then sent a right-footed shot into the back of the net, tying the match at 1-1.
Nine minutes into the second half, The Berg would take the lead by taking advantage of a quick corner kick play. Before Denison's defense could get into position, Heidelberg played the corner kick quickly and Hamid Shariff put an excellent pass on the boot of Ryan Homoki who received the ball cleanly and scored from the right side of the goal.
Denison's best chance at tying the score came in the 83rd minute when Ryan Fine spun and put his back heel on the ball and sent it toward the goal. The shot from Fine went just wide. That would be the final shot attempt of the night for the Big Red.
Heidelberg held a 16-10 advantage in shots but Denison won the corner kick battle, 6-4. Stevens turned in four saves for the Student Princes while Schach finished with three saves for the home team. Colin Hockenbury led DU with three shots, Fine finished with two. Eoff paced Heidelberg with six shot attempts.
Denison drops to 4-4-1 while Heidelberg improves to 4-4-2. The Big Red will return to North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday when they travel to Hiram for a 4 p.m. start.
