DU, W&L play to scoreless draw

Box Score

The Denison men's soccer team and the Washington & Lee Generals battled to a scoreless draw in Friday night's season-opening match at Barclay-Thomsen Field.

The Big Red controlled the majority of the first half, holding a 10-6 edge in shots.  After earning a corner kick in the 15th minute, freshman Quinn Miller nearly broke the scoreless tie when he redirected a Mark Waterman corner.  However, Miller's touch sent the ball into the outside of the net.  DU had another golden opportunity in the 33rd minute when a shot by Evan Porter was flicked towards the net by senior Blake Miller.  The senior's redirection struck the left post and rolled parallel with the goal line before being cleared out by the General defense.

After trailing in the shot category following the first 45 minutes, Washington & Lee came roaring out in the second period.  The visiting team amassed 11 shots in the period, while holding the Big Red to just five attempts. Even though they took 11 shots, only one General attempt made it on goal.  That shot was a point blank attempt by Zach Colby that was snagged by senior goalie Matt Wagner.

Roughly two and a half minutes into the first overtime, senior Jamie Wagner ripped a shot that went wide of the goal mouth.  In the 97th minute, Wagner rifled another shot that sailed well over the crossbar.  In the second overtime session, Wagner, Kennedy Kommor and Collin Hockenbury all recorded a shot for the Big Red. Both Wagner and Hockenbury's shots were stopped by W&L goalie Albert Civitarese.

Denison held a 20-17 edge in shots, including a 5-0 advantage in the 20 minutes of overtime.  DU also attempted 11 corner kicks compared to five by the Generals.  W&L committed 20 fouls, while Denison was whistled for 11 infractions.

Wagner paced the offense with five shots, while Blake Miller logged three attempts.  Colby recorded a game-high seven shots for Washington & Lee, while Al Organ registered three shots.  Matt Wagner finished the game with two saves, while Civitarese made four stops.

Both squads move to 0-0-1 on the season. The Big Red returns to Barclay-Thomsen Field on Saturday when they host Sewanee at 6 p.m.
