The Denison men's tennis team picked up a 7-2 victory over Division II Walsh on Sunday morning at the Hall of Fame Courts in Canton, Ohio.
Sophomore Jeffrey LoDuca and freshman Jackson O'Gorman-Bean put the Big Red in front early with an 8-3 win over Carlos Jaque and Chase Pucci at the third doubles flight. DU took a 2-0 lead when Casey Cempre and Andrew Marczak doubled up Alex Portelance and Jarred Gable at No. 2 doubles. The Cavs cut the deficit in half with an 8-6 victory at first doubles.
Denison won five of the six singles flights to secure the decision. Sophomores Grant Veltman and Graham Gettel picked up three-set victories at second and fifth singles, respectively. Veltman won his flight with 6-4 decisions in the first and third flights, while Gettel posted back-to-back 6-1 scores after dropping the opening set.
Cempre, Marczak and O'Gorman-Bean all notched straight-set victories at the third, fourth and sixth flights. Cempre and Marczak won by matching 6-4, 6-2 scores, while O'Gorman-Bean picked up a convincing 6-1, 6-3 decision.
The Big Red improves to 2-0 on the season, while Walsh drops to 1-3. Denison returns to the court on Wednesday when they host Earlham at 4 p.m.
