Box Score The Denison men's soccer team closed out the 2013 season with a 2-2 draw with 25th-ranked DePauw University on Senior Day in Granville, Ohio.
The Big Red grabbed all the momentum in the opening 45 minutes of the game, generating multiple scoring chances. In the fifth minute, senior Bob Casarona chipped a pass to classmate Jamie Wagner who snuck behind the Tiger backline. Unfortunately, Wagner pushed his shot to the left of the goal.
Fifteen minutes later, senior Blake Miller pushed his header shot to the right of the net, while junior Corey Ricketts had his shot in the 22nd minute turned aside by defender EJ Moore. The Big Red also got quality opportunities from seniors Charlie Allen and Casarona, but at the end of the first half the score remained deadlocked at 0-0.
Denison wasted no time breaking up the scoreless tie in the second period when Allen and Casarona teamed up for the first score of the game. Allen dribbled the ball down the right side and sent a cross into the center of the box from the corner. Allen's pass found Casarona who one-touched the ball into the lower right corner of the goal. Casarona's 10th goal of the year came at 45:32 and gave the home team a one-goal lead.
Roughly 24 minutes later, the Big Red doubled its advantage when once again Allen sent a pass in from the right side that found junior Mark Waterman in the box. The junior midfielder dribbled into the box and fired a shot into the upper left 90 for his fifth goal of the year.
The Tigers quickly answered in the 76th minute when Andy Morrison buried a header into the upper left corner off a chip pass from David Large. DePauw nearly tied the game in the 78th minute, but Mitch Tabler couldn't capitalize on a wide open net. Despite the missed opportunity, the Tigers found the back of the net for the second time off a set piece in the 89th minute of play. Once again Morrison buried a shot, this time off a corner kick from Adrian Ables.
DePauw posted the first three shot attempts of the first overtime, all of which were stopped by DU senior goalie Matt Wagner. The Big Red turned the tables in the second half of the OT period, attempting four shots over the final 2+ minutes of the first extra session. In the second overtime, the two squads combined for three shots, all of which were blocked down before reaching the goal.
Both teams attempted 16 shots, with DU holding a 9-7 edge in shots on goal. Denison also committed 18 fouls and received two yellow cards, while the Tigers were whistled for just eight infractions. The Big Red also held 7-4 advantage in corners.
