Golden goal gives Denison OT win

Box Score

Blake Miller's goal with 1:13 left in double overtime earned the Big Red a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Capital on Wednesday afternoon in Bexley.

The Crusaders forced the extra period when R.G. Florey converted a penalty kick with just under three minutes left in regulation.  Capital mustered the only shot attempt in the first overtime session, a shot that was stopped by junior keeper Matt Wagner.

In the second OT, the Crusaders continued to apply pressure on the DU defense, firing three shots towards the Big Red goal.  Inside the final five minutes, freshman Ryan Fine logged Denison's first shot in overtime.  With less than two minutes to play, Fine sent a cross to the middle of the box that was tapped in by Miller, ending the marathon game.

The goal was Miller's fourth in the last two games.  The junior scored a hat trick in his home town of Westerville, Ohio as DU double up Otterbein on Sunday afternoon.

The Big Red struck first when Will Krentz scored off a Mark Waterman corner kick at the 32 minute mark in the opening period.  Krentz's first of the year gave Denison a 1-0 lead at the intermission.  Just 16 seconds into the second stanza, Al Argyris tied the game off a cross from Nick Eley.

In the 76th minute, Kory Silberg slipped a pass to senior captain Ryan Torgersen in the middle of the 18-yard box.  Torgersen's shot into the upper left 90 gave DU a one-goal lead until the 87:10 mark when Florey converted his PK.

Torgersen attempted a game-high five shots, including four on goal, while Bob Casarona and Miller each unloaded three attempts.  Capital was led by Argyris' five shots.  Wagner finished the night with three saves, while Crusader keeper Bob Weisbarger stopped seven shots.

Denison improves to 2-0-1 on the year, while Capital falls to 1-2.  The Big Red returns to action on Saturday when they take on Elizabethtown at 4 p.m.
