Quakers edge Big Red, 2-1

Box Score

Cody Sabins' second-half goal powered the Wilmington Quakers to a 2-1 victory over Denison on Tuesday evening in Granville, Ohio.

Wilmington struck early when a cross by Marcus Thorbjornsson tipped off the hands of Big Red keeper Andrew Stewart and found the foot of Erik Hammar.  Hammar's second goal of the year came in the 20th minute of play.

Less than four minutes later, DU answered with a score of its own.  Junior Will Krentz sent a crossing pass into sophomore JJ Dix.  The sophomore forward deked past the keeper and buried a shot into the wide open net.  The goal was Dix's third of the season.

Despite quality chances throughout the rest of the period, the two squads enter the intermission deadlocked at 1-1.  At the break, Wilmington held a slim 7-6 edge in shots, but the Big Red sent four shots on net compared to just two by the visiting squad.

In the 74 minute, Sabins gave Wilmington a 2-1 lead with his third goal of the year.  After his initial shot was deflected by Stewart, Sabins followed with a second attempt that found the back of the goal.

The Big Red outshot the Quakers 12-11, including a 5-4 edge in shots on net.  Wilmington won the corner battle 5-2, and committed six fouls compared to seven by DU.  Stewart made two saves in his first-collegiate start, while Quaker keeper Antonio Trujillo stopped four shots.

Denison falls to 4-4-2 on the year, while Wilmington ups its record to 5-4.  The Big Red returns to the pitch on Saturday when they host Allegheny at 3 p.m.
