No. 25 DePauw edges Denison

Box Score

Patrick Reineke's goal in the 84th minute lifted 25th-ranked DePauw to a 2-1 victory over  Denison in both team's North Coast Athletic Conference opener on Saturday afternoon.

The two squads played a scoreless first half that was dominated offensively by the Tigers.  The home team logged nine shots and attempted six corner kicks in the first 45 minutes of play.  Four minutes and five seconds into the second half DePauw took a one-goal lead when Nate Snyder scored his third goal of the season.  A cross from George Elliott found Adrian Ables in the box.  Ables headed the ball over to Snyder who scored on a header of his own.

In the 62nd minute, the Big Red offense finally broke through when Bob Casarona scored off assists from Ryan Fine and JJ Dix.  Casarona's first goal of the season tied the game at 1-1 midway through the second period.

With less than seven minutes to play in regulation, Andy Morrison headed a ball into the box that brought Denison keeper Matt Wagner off his line.  With Wagner charging, Reineke chipped a shot over the keeper and into the lower left 90 to put DePauw back on top.

Ryan Torgersen and Kory Silberg each logged a shot in the final three minutes of play.  Torgersen's header was stopped by goalie Tony Halterman, while the Silberg attempt sailed over the goal.  Mark Waterman had a corner kick attempt inside the final 60 seconds that yielded no shot attempt by DU.

The Tigers held a 17-9 advantage in shots and a 6-4 edge in corners.  Wagner made four saves on the afternoon, while Halterman stopped two shots en route to his fifth win of the year.

Denison falls to 3-3-1 on the year and 0-1 in the NCAC, while the Tigers improve to 5-0-2 and 1-0 in conference play.  DU returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to Muskingum for a 7:30 p.m. match.
