Box Score Two goals in the final 11 minutes of regulation were enough for Heidelberg to cap off an impressive second half comeback against the Denison Big Red. The Student Princes scored all four of their goals in the second half to stun DU, 4-3 from Barclay-Thomsen Field.
In the first half, Denison outshot their opponents 13-4 and held a 1-0 lead thanks to a goal by Will Krentz in the 28th minute. One minute into the second half, Heidleberg was flagged for a foul on the Big Red in the box and Mark Waterman converted his second penalty kick of the season, putting his team up 2-0.
Just 18 seconds later, Heidelberg's Christopher Koczak answered off an assist from Ryan Smith. That duo would strike again in a reversal of roles four minutes later. Koczak played a cross to Smith from the near side of the field to the left foot of Smith, who sent the ball into the goal, tying the match at 2-2.
In the 62nd minute, DU would strike back when current North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week, Blake Miller, scored his league-high sixth goal of the season after a shot by Waterman was saved by Heidelberg goalkeeper, Matthew Stevens. Miller controlled the loose ball and put home the go-ahead goal for the Big Red.
Things would remain in DU's favor for the next 17 minutes. That's when Heidelberg's Tyler Eoff tied the match for a second time via an assist from Eric Furst from 12-yards away. The eventual game-winner by Heidelberg would come off the foot of Koczak after a challenge by Denison goalkeeper Matt Wagner. With the ball up in the air and Wagner out of position, Koczak gathered and looped a shot into the empty net. Over the final five minutes, Denison would take four more shot attempts to go along with four additional corner kicks but were turned away twice by Stevens saves.
Denison did outshoot Heidelberg 24-15 and they attempted a season-high 18 corner kicks while the visitors took just one. Trent Lacer played the first 45 minutes in goal for The Berg, posting four saves. Stevens played the second half and ended with three saves. Wagner tallied two saves for the Big Red.
The loss drops Denison's record to 3-2-1 while Heidelberg improves to 2-3. DU will travel to DePauw this Saturday to open NCAC play at 2:30 p.m.
